Beethoven's Ninth SymphonyRobert W. Butts conducts the New Jersey Symphony Chamber OrchestraMedia Coverage of 2005-11-19 By Our Own Baroque Orchestra Reporter, Michael Feula On November 19, 2005, having previously made guest conducting appearances with major orchestras in Eastern Europe and in Russia, Maestro Robert W. Butts made his first appearance with a major American orchestra, conducting Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra - for the concert, officially the New Jersey Symphony Chamber Orchestra because of the reduced ensemble and because the concert was not part of the orchestra’s regular season. The concert was the second Limited Edition Event produced by impresario Howard Hain at his recently opened Nous Theatre. With the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey and Masterwork Chorus, Mr. Butts conducted the inaugural event, a three concert presentation of the music of Mendelssohn, Shostakovich, and Mozart’s Requiem. For the Beethoven 9th with NJSO, Mr. Hain and the Maestro invited singers from Masterworks, Harmonium and the New Jersey Concert Opera Chorus along with soloists Olive Lynch, Elizabeth Moulton, Gary Pate, and Don Sheasley. As one listener said: “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the symphony in such an intimate setting.” And Mr. Butts called the concert “a special thrill, not only because of the opportunity to conduct such great musicians, but because I’d grown up in New Jersey and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra was one of the first orchestras I’d ever heard. Many of my greatest musical memories are of concerts performed by the orchestra under Henry Lewis, Hugh Wolf, Zdenek Macal and now Naemi Jaarvi. Conducting Beethoven’s 9th for the first time with this orchestra is something I’ll never forget.” On Friday evening, January 13, 2006, Mr. Butts will add to his American conducting resume conducting Anton Bruckner’s Symphony #6 with the prestigious Orchestra Society of Philadelphia.
